Theme and Rationale
This special issue explores how Ukrainian forced migrants navigate integration through dual agency—combining entrepreneurial and civic engagement strategies—and how these practices co-create civic–economic ecosystems across Europe. Moving beyond linear models of integration, this special issue invites contributions that examine the interplay between economic and civic participation, the systemic contexts shaping these processes, and the translocal linkages that sustain them.
Key Questions and Topics
We welcome theoretical, empirical, and case or comparative studies addressing (but not limited to): • Systemic contexts: How do national and local institutions enable or constrain refugee entrepreneurship and civic engagement?
• Dual agency: How do migrants combine business and civic roles to navigate integration and resilience? • Ecosystem dynamics: How do civic and economic actors co-create new spaces for inclusion and innovation?
• Gendered and intersectional perspectives: How do gender and intersectional factors shape migrant entrepreneurship and civic participation?
• Transnational and translocal strategies: How do migrants sustain ties with their home country while integrating into host societies?
• Policy and governance approaches: How can policy and governance frameworks promote inclusive integration models in the EU?
