The Russain war against Ukraine has entered this field in different ways. For some, it has become the main subject of study. Others have shifted their topics because of it. In many cases, it has changed how research is done: the sources people use, the questions they ask, and their position as researchers.
This workshop invites early- and mid-career scholars to reflect on these changes through their own work. We are interested in what has actually shifted for you since the beginning of the war.
What has changed in your research? In your topics, your materials, your methods? Have you moved into new fields, or continued earlier work under different conditions? How do you work with sources that are being produced right now? Where do you draw the line between distance and involvement? What has become more difficult or no longer possible?
We welcome contributions based on concrete research experience. This may include:
• working on the war as a subject
• changing research topics because of the war
• working with testimonies produced during ongoing events
• shifts in methods or ways of interpretation
• changes in the researcher’s position
• ethical tensions in working on war
• the place of research in public discussions
Instead of finished papers, we ask for short reflections based on your own work.
The workshop is meant as a space to think together about how the war is changing research practice. It will also include lectures by the organizers and invited speakers, as well as discussions around the participants’ contributions and the questions they raise.
We ask you to submit a short reflection (ca. 300–500 words) based on your own research experience.
Please briefly indicate your current project or research context and outline the questions, problems, or uncertainties that have emerged in your work and that you would like to think through together. Please also include a short CV (1 page).
