During the first days and weeks after the German attack on the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941 the Jews in the newly occupied territories were hit by a wave of violence from the side of the German police and armed forces as well as from anti-Soviet insurgents and the civilian population. The talk will present results of a larger study on its contexts, motifs, and scale in Eastern Galicia and compare that region with others in that strip of territory between the Baltic and the Black Sea that the Soviet Union had occupied after September 1939 and where acts of violence with local involvement in summer 1941 mostly occurred. The findings for Eastern Galicia are based on a close examination of events in several dozen localities and on an analysis of the relations between the Germans and the Ukrainian nationalists.
